Alternative Dispute Resolution
In recent years, families in transition have increasingly sought out alternative dispute resolution in an effort to reduce the strain and protracted course of traditional divorce. While such techniques can be very effective for some families, the presence of domestic violence or intimate partner sexual abuse should disqualify a family from such forms of cooperative justice. The presence of domestic violence means that one partner wields far more power than the other, and agreements may be coerced.
